How do you put in an ink cartridge in a new fountain pen?
Q. I just got a new fountain pen (my first) that has a cartridge ink system. As this is the first time I've ever had a fountain pen, I have no idea how to put in an ink cartridge, and I don't want to mess up and damage my pen. So, I'm wondering how you put in an ink cartridge into a fountain pen, and if there's anything special I should do (to the pen or ink cartridge) if the pen is brand new.

A. You should be able to just insert the cartridge and start writing. Sometimes there is a tiny plastic tip protector on the nib that needs to be removed, but otherwise that's all there is to it. If it's a Sheaffer style pen, the cartridge will be flat on the ends, and the feed mechanism in the pen will pierce the cartridge to release ink. Parker and other types with a nipple on one end will only go in one direction, with the nipple pointing up toward the nib end of the pen. It's a good idea to invest in a piston converter, a refillable syringe cartridge that will also rinse out your pen with water. (Never use hot water to rinse your pen- you could ruin it!)
