What do you call the extension pipe to mix hot and cold water from sink?
Q. I am looking for this extension pipe on ebay but I don't know the exact term for it. You fit in one part to the cold water pipe and the other to the hot water pipe. Its made of rubber or plastic but can be easily taken out and can be easily kept. This is used for sinks where the sink has an independent hot and cold pipe. You usually can find this at cheap bargain shops. Does anyone know what is it called?

How much does it cost to replace underground water pipe?
Q. Our underground water pipe is 275 feet long and leaks closing to the water meter. What is the reasonable price to replace the whole 275 feet water pipe? The pipe leaked 6 years ago and previous owner spent $3489 just replaced the leaked part with copper. Currently we have plumber estimate as $9800 by using directional boring. Not quite sure if it is reasonable.

A. City or State code plays a factor here. Flexible K copper is not cheap plus some states require the line to be 8 feet deep. If you have old black pipe or galvanized pipe, yes you should replace the whole thing. If you can have it 3 feet deep then you can do this your self and pay a plumber to hook it up. Save big bucks. Contact your City on there requirements. Plumbing store for the copper. Rental store for a ditch witch to dig a trench. Plumber to tie in all of your fittings and to the meter. Under ground requires a flaired fitting to connect the copper lines. But for a plumber to do the job for under $36.00 per foot seems like a great price to me. It would be a great deal more here in Ohio.

I have talked with someone who says just having a lot of pipe can provide adequate water pressure How?
Q. He says he pumps from a pond into 200 feet of poly-pipe. The pipe is slightly higher than the pond and at the same level as a house. He says the water in the pipe provides pressue for the house. I say that the pipe has to be higher than the house or the pump has to be running for there to be pressure. Comments?

A. the pipe does have to be higher than the house for gravity fed pressure. however if the pipe expands slightly as the pump forces water into the system it would essentially act like a holding tank. holding tanks have bladders in them to help maintain even pressure when supplying water from a pump or well. but how much does the pipe expand and for how long you would see that pressure if the pump was off and the water could not back flow? not much. he is probably just getting the pressure from the pump itself.
