Q. I've got the IQ test in hand and further testing is in progress per the school district's request. But it seems like every parent of a gifted child meets resistance from public schools and either fights them or gives up on public schools. As someone who both has a disability (blindness) and who has spent years working with students with disabilities, I have to disagree. In the majority of school systems, "special ed" is given little more than lip service--and many of the parents have an unending struggle to get even a minimum of accomodations. Not to minimize your problem--its quite real (I went down that road as a child myslelf). My suggestion is threefold--and with specific reasons for each suggestion: First, to the extent you can do so without a big fight, have your child put in advanced classes, etc. The reason for this is obvious--it maximises educational opportunities. Second--DON'T make a major issue of this--at least not in front of your child.
